Sixth grade students created websites of their family history using photographs. The goals of the project were to increase student awareness of their family history, to build skills in narrative writing, and to increase awareness of their family’s place in national and world events. Students brought in several family photographs; two “older,” perhaps dating back 50 years or more; the other more recent, one which was taken during the lifetime of the student.
The older photos served as springboards for each student’s investigation of family history. They learned interview techniques to gather information about the picture from family or close friends. The recent photo gave students an opportunity to write a narrative about something familiar, and then compare the stories and the experience of writing them.
